Companion Care Services

When most people think of home care they envision aging seniors getting physical assistance with daily living needs, such as bathing, grooming, toileting and ambulation (movement) around the home. But home care is also about providing much-needed companionship to elderly people.

For a variety of factors – a loss of independence, the death of loved ones and friends, health issues, adult children who either live too far away or have too little time – many elderly people spend much of their time alone. This lack of social stimulation, studies have shown, can result in isolation, loneliness and depression. It can even affect one’s physical well-being.

A home health aide or at-home companion can play a critical role by:

  1. Giving patients a social outlet. A companion can provide stimulation at home, or take the patient to outside social activities.
  2. Providing transportation. Seniors who are willing to participate in social activities often have no way of getting there because they can’t drive or take public transportation.
  3. Preparing snacks and light meals. Under or malnourishment can be a problem as many seniors have no one to take control of this situation.
  4. Giving medication reminders. Failing to take one’s medication – or even worse, taking it improperly – can be dangerous.
  5. Keeping family members informed of their loved one’s condition. Many family members feel guilty because they can’t be there to care for their older relatives. A companion can offer peace of mind and a set of eyes to report back to family.
  6. Reading books and participating in hobbies and other types of entertainment. Companions can offer mental stimulation by playing board games, helping with crossword puzzles, or discussing current events.
  7. Encouraging physical activity. Going for a walk alone isn’t nearly as enjoyable as walking with a friend – especially for an aging adult who has mobility issues. Aides can also promote physical activity at home by motivating their clients to participate in daily activities like cleaning or doing laundry.
  8. Providing a receptive ear. Simply put, all people need attention and someone who will listen to what they have to say takes on significant importance.
